(6/10) Designing, illustrating, and planning cards & zine illustration

What did I do this week?

  • Assigned illustrations to zine pages

  • Listed card items, description, and category

  • Created card border mockup of margin testing

  • Illustrated card borders

  • Started making different illustration styles for card

Assigned illustrations to zine pages

I went through my entire zine and read through all the possible places that I marked in my draft where I thought an illustration could be inserted. I then decided which illustration idea I wanted to include and noted it down in the zine mockup and my Notion table. I find that putting it on my Notion table helps me keep track of my work more.

Listed card items, description, and category

Additionally, other than a list of illustrations I needed to make for my zine, I also created a list of topics I want to create cards for in my Chinese New Year deck. These were separated into different categories that will be made up of different colors and borders for easy identification. I think I might add more to the list honestly. Items for this list were found via books and websites online.

Research illustrated card borders

I start my illustration process for my card borders, I did some research into Chinese Desing Motifs. I took out books from the library about Chinese Design motifs and did more individual research online. My goal is to design someone that looks “Chinese” and distinctive.

Created card border mockup of margin testing

From my research, I found some motifs I liked and created some mockups on paper to see which ones I liked best. I choose the designs to draw digital by asking for feedback from others. I also really liked creating a mockup to test what margins I wanted around the border and my content.

Started making different illustration styles for card

Once I found the designs I liked, I illustrated them on Procreate. One of my goals for the card is for it to be distinctive and appear hand-drawn and not too “designed”. Once it was finished in Procreate, I airdropped it into my Illustrator where I already created a template for my cards.
