Week 10: I’m so burned out, I need a break

What did I do this week:

  • Refined stakeholder map

  • Creating a personal encyclopedia of rituals occurring in Chinese New Year

  • Narrowed down research methods I will use in my research plan

Refined Stakeholder Map

Following my meeting with Professor Ahmed, I mainly focused on refining my stakeholder map so that I can have a narrower focus. I started off by reading a few articles about stakeholder mapping, as I had never really done the version mentioned in class before. I read or watched:

Once I gained a background understanding of what the stakeholder map is, I decided that it was better for me to start off by first making a detailed ecosystem map on Figma based on what I created from the IDEO website. An image of what I created is shown below. I thought it was a fun exercise. Definitely took a lot longer than I thought. But again, it was a nice exercise to do and it helped me to think of stakeholders that I wouldn’t have thought of otherwise.

Once I created the ecosystem map, I used the parties that I identified in my ecosystem map to create my stakeholder map, which is shown below. I really liked connecting them all together and figuring out what the relationships were between all the stakeholders. I did have to update my ecosystem map for my stakeholder to make sure all of the stakeholders on there were people and not institutions.

Encyclopedia of Chinese New Year Rituals

Again, as per the suggestion by the professor, I created a document meant to catalog all the rituals that occur during Chinese New Year. To be honest, I didn’t start this earlier because I knew I would enjoy the process and I wanted to do it when I was in a dark place so that I had something to enjoy. Also, it never really occurred to me to write all the stuff that I knew down because I already knew it and it was in my head. But hey, it seemed like a good enough time to start. Truth to my hypothesis, I really enjoy the process of cataloging and organizing the information that I found. So far, I have organized it into different sections: food, performances, symbols, honoring, clothes, myths, decorations, and red pocket. I look forward to doing more of it.

Narrowed down my research methods

Lastly, I continued to refine my research plan. Mostly, I narrowed down my research methods to five methods.

  1. Autoethnography

  2. Cultural Probes

  3. Diary studies

  4. Survey

  5. Secondary interviews with people that filled out survey/kits/studies (as needed)

I like the idea of doing self-reported methods as a lot of my research has to do with memory and I want the participants to feel like they can have a lot of time to think about it and to have the questions in front of them for a while. I think the first think I have do to though is reach up about cultural probes and diary studies just to get a background on them.
